The Dessert Shelf: Gelato, Cake and Cookie Crosses

Most of the modern shelf descends from a small handful of dessert crosses, which is why so many jars smell like sugar. Knowing how they relate to each other is the fastest way to find the next one you will like from the one you already do.

    What our staff hand over

How the family tree actually runs

Girl Scout Cookies crossed into Pink Panties gave Sunset Sherbert. Sherbert crossed back into a Cookies cut gave Gelato. Gelato phenotypes then produced Wedding Cake, Biscotti, Gushers and most of what has been released since.

That shared ancestry is why the dessert shelf smells so similar. What separates the jars is which parent's structure came through — the sweetness is nearly always Cookies, and the weight is usually an OG somewhere further back.

    Sweet does not mean gentle

This is the single most common misread at our counter. The dessert family tests at the top of the shelf far more often than the old-school earthy strains do, and the pleasant flavor makes it easy to take more than intended.

If you are moving from something like Northern Lights or AK-47 into this family, expect a step up and adjust the amount accordingly.

What to ask for if you like one of them

Tell the counter which dessert strain worked and whether you wanted it lighter or heavier. That single sentence narrows the case faster than any category filter, because we know which way each cross leans.

Freshness matters more in this family than most. The terpenes that make them smell like frosting are the first thing to fade in a jar that has been sitting.

    Pick it up in person

Availability rotates with what our growers finish, so the live menu is the accurate source for what is in each case today. Valid OMMA card and matching photo ID required at both stores.

    Common questions

    What are dessert strains?

It is an informal name for the Cookies, Sherbert, Gelato and Cake family — cultivars whose terpene profiles read as sweet, creamy or baked rather than earthy or fuel-forward.

    Is Gelato indica or sativa?

Gelato and most of its descendants are indica-leaning hybrids, though the balance shifts noticeably between phenotypes.

Which dessert strain is the heaviest?

Of the ones we stock regularly, Ice Cream Cake and Biscotti sit at the heavy end and Sunset Sherbert sits at the light end.

Why do dessert strains cost more?

Many of them yield modestly and are demanding to grow well, and demand for the names is high. Current pricing is on the live menu.
