    The Beginner's Guide

    Cannabis 101

Everything we end up explaining at the counter anyway — THC, CBD, terpenes, edibles. Read what you need and ask us about the rest.

    Start With the Compounds

    Meet the Cannabinoids

There are hundreds of active compounds in this plant. These are the three you'll actually hear us talk about.

    THC

    Tetrahydrocannabinol

THC is the one everybody means when they say weed. It's the euphoria. It's also the appetite and the good night's sleep after a long day on your feet.

    CBD

    Cannabidiol

CBD won't get you high on its own. Folks come in for it to take the edge off, quiet down sore muscles, or soften a THC dose that runs a little strong.

    CBG

    Cannabigerol

CBG is what we hand people who want to feel something without losing the afternoon. Clear head, steady mood, still able to get things done.

    The Three Big Buckets

    Indica · Sativa · Hybrid

    Body & Bedtime

    Indica

The heavy stuff. Indica settles into your arms and legs first. That's why folks grab it after a shift, when their back hurts, or when they just want to actually sleep.

    Head & Daytime

    Sativa

Brighter and up in your head. Sativa leans toward energy and talking. It's what people pick before a hike or a project they've been putting off.

    Best of Both

    Hybrid

A cross between the two, pulled whichever direction the grower wanted. Most of what's on our shelf lives here. Easy to dial in for whatever time of day you're in.

    Know the Menu

    Product Formats

Just about everything behind our counter falls into one of these six. Here's what each one is really like.

    Flower

    Onset

    Within minutes

    Duration

    1–3 hours

Dried bud you smoke in a pipe, a joint, or a bong. Fastest way to feel anything, and you can take one hit and wait to see where you land.

    Pre-rolls

    Onset

    Within minutes

    Duration

    1–3 hours

Joints already rolled for you. Nothing to grind and nothing to roll. It's the cheapest way to test a strain before you buy an eighth of it.

    Vape Carts

    Onset

    Within minutes

    Duration

    1–3 hours

A little cartridge of oil that screws onto a battery. Doesn't smell like much and fits in a shirt pocket, which is why half our regulars carry one.

    Edibles

    Onset

    30–90 minutes

    Duration

    4–8 hours

Gummies, chocolate, drinks. They take their time coming on and then stay a while. Start at 2.5 to 5 mg, wait the full hour and a half, and don't take a second one because the first one is 'not working.'

    Concentrates

    Onset

    Within minutes

    Duration

    1–3 hours

Wax, rosin, live resin. Strongest and best-tasting thing on the shelf. We'll be honest with you though — this isn't where you start.

    Topicals & Tinctures

    Onset

    15–45 minutes

    Duration

    2–6 hours

Creams you rub straight on the sore spot and drops you put under your tongue. Good when you want relief in one place, and plenty of them won't get you high at all.

    Start Low · Go Slow

    Dosing Made Simple

There's no right number, just the one that works for you. Start somewhere on here and adjust after you see how it lands.

    Micro

    1–2.5 mg THC

First time out, coming off a tolerance break, or you still have to work.

    Low

    2.5–5 mg THC

A light lift and a little body relief. Fine around company.

    Standard

    5–15 mg THC

Where most of our regulars land for an evening at home.

    High

    15+ mg THC

Built up to over time, usually for chronic pain or bad nights.

One rule with edibles: wait the full 90 minutes before you take any more. Nearly every bad first experience we hear about started with somebody deciding the first gummy wasn't working.

    The Aroma & The Vibe

    Common Terpenes

Terpenes are what you're smelling when you stick your nose in the jar. They shape how a strain feels, too.

    Myrcene

    Earthy · Mango · Clove

The most common terpene there is. When a strain hits you in the body and puts you in the recliner, myrcene usually had a hand in it.

    Limonene

    Citrus · Lemon Peel

Smells like lemon peel and lifts your mood about the same way. Shows up in a lot of the daytime strains we carry.

    Pinene

    Pine · Fresh Forest

Smells like a fresh-cut Christmas tree. This is the one people ask for when they want to stay sharp instead of foggy.

    Linalool

    Lavender · Floral

Same compound that makes lavender calming. No surprise it's a favorite for the hour before bed.

    Caryophyllene

    Pepper · Spice

Warm and peppery, almost like cracked black pepper. Patients working through inflammation and daily aches bring it up a lot.

    Humulene

    Hops · Woody

Smells like a beer before it's beer. Common in the old-school strains and known for a mellow, even ride.

    Speak the Language

    Cannabis Glossary

    Budtender

The person behind our counter. Asking them questions is the whole job, so ask.

    Cannabinoid

Any of the active compounds in cannabis. THC, CBD and CBG are the ones you'll hear about.

    Concentrate

Cannabis boiled down to a much stronger form. Oils, wax, rosin and live resin all count.

    Entourage Effect

The idea that cannabinoids and terpenes work better together than any one of them does alone.

    Flower

Dried, cured cannabis bud. The original.

    Hybrid

A cross of indica and sativa genetics. Which way it leans depends on the cross.

    Indica

Strains known for relaxing, body-heavy effects.

    Microdose

A very small dose, usually under 2.5 mg of THC. Takes the edge off without an obvious high.

    OMMA

Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority. The state agency that issues patient cards.

    Pre-roll

A joint that's already rolled, sealed and ready to light.

    Reciprocity

When one state honors another state's medical card. Oklahoma makes out-of-state patients apply for a temporary card through OMMA. Your home-state card by itself won't get you a purchase.

    Sativa

Strains known for uplifting, head-forward effects.

    Strain

A particular variety of cannabis with its own effects, flavor and smell.

    Terpene

The aromatic compounds behind a strain's smell. They shape how it feels, too.

    THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol. The cannabinoid most responsible for the high.

    Tincture

A liquid cannabis extract you take in drops under the tongue.

    Tolerance

How much you need before you feel anything. It climbs with regular use and drops back down if you take a few days off.

    Common Questions

    Cannabis 101 FAQ

What's the difference between THC and CBD?

    +

THC is the one that gets you high. Euphoria, appetite, deep sleep. CBD won't get you high on its own. Patients use it to ease stress, quiet sore muscles, or take the edge off a THC dose that ran a little strong.

If I've never tried cannabis, what should I start with?

    +

Most first-timers do fine with a low-dose edible around 2.5 to 5 mg, or one balanced hybrid pre-roll. Tell whoever's at our counter that it's your first time. They'll pull something gentle and tell you straight what to expect.

How long does an edible take to kick in?

    +

Usually 30 to 90 minutes, depending on your metabolism and whether you've eaten. Once it lands it can stick around four to eight hours. The rule is simple: take your dose and wait the full ninety minutes before you even think about a second one.

Will smoking flower hit faster than an edible?

    +

By a mile. Flower, vapes and concentrates come on within minutes and usually peak in the first half hour. Edibles, tinctures and topicals take longer because your liver has to get involved first.

What does 'indica' or 'sativa' actually tell me?

    +

Less than people think. It's a rough guide. Indicas usually feel relaxing and body-heavy, sativas usually feel up and talkative, hybrids sit somewhere between. The terpene profile and your own chemistry matter just as much as the word on the label.

What if I take too much?

    +

It's miserable, but it isn't dangerous. Nobody has ever died of a cannabis overdose. Get somewhere quiet, drink water, eat something, slow your breathing down. It passes in a few hours. If you have CBD around, it helps.
